What is the difference between a Lead, Recurring, & One Time Volunteer?

Lead Volunteer is a highly committed volunteer who takes on a leadership role during shifts, guiding others, ensuring tasks are completed correctly, and communicating with staff. A Recurring Volunteer participates on a regular basis, such as weekly or monthly, becoming familiar with processes and building consistency without taking on a leadership role. A One-Time Volunteer helps for a single shift or event, completing assigned tasks with guidance from staff or lead volunteers, with no ongoing commitment required.

 

How do I become a recurring volunteer?

To qualify for recurring volunteer shifts, you must first:

  • Volunteer during at least one open volunteer session

  • Demonstrate reliability, teamwork, and understanding of MBB values

  • Complete all required paperwork (Volunteer Waiver and, if under 18, Parental Consent Form)

​What happens during my first visit?

You’ll receive:

  • A warehouse tour

  • Introduction to core volunteer tasks

  • Safety guidelines review

Why do I need to start in an open volunteer session?

This allows you to:

  • Learn the flow of the warehouse and tasks

  • Meet staff and other volunteers

  • Show commitment and readiness for a recurring schedule

How do I request recurring volunteer status?

After at least one open session, speak with the Program Coordinator to request recurring status. Approval is based on:​

  • Your schedule & availability record

  • Your understanding of tasks and safety standards

What kind of schedule can recurring volunteers have?

Once approved, you can schedule regular shifts outside of public volunteer hours, typically on weekdays.

Do I need to track my hours?

Yes — sign in and out each shift. Hours are used to:

  • Document volunteer engagement

  • Support grant funding

  • Provide verification for school, court, or service awards (notify staff in advance if needed)

How can I stay involved as a recurring volunteer?

  • Take on special projects

  • Assist during community event

  • Share ideas or feedback with staff
